It’s our first solocast of Season 2 and Katharine sits down to talk about gratitude and loss. She shares her thoughts on how these two concepts are inextricably linked and gives examples from her own life. She also talks about the upcoming holiday craziness and how sometimes (against our better judgment) we end up doing things we said we’d “NEVER” do — and how that’s not always a bad thing. She also reads a poem by one of her favorite poets, Mary Oliver. This is a short and sweet episode and we hope you enjoy this one as a kickoff to your holiday season.

Hurrah a holiday special! Katharine and Seth are joined today by their friend Reneé Moss, a fellow mama bear and Waldorf-trained educator to discuss things that go bump in the night. Reneé shares a brief history of Halloween from the Celtic ritual of Samhain to today’s less sacred candy-scare-fest. All three share their childhood memories of Halloween and how the 80’s and 90’s just felt simpler (is it just us?!). They also discuss their concerns with where the holiday has gone over the past two decades and the ways in which the holiday feels less kid-friendly. They talk about challenging parenting moments from endless candy to trying to protect their children from the scary, the sexy, and the deranged. We hope you enjoyed this episode and please let us know your thoughts on Halloween!

This week Seth and Katharine talk about the ways in which we as parents unconsciously gaslight our kids and undermine their emotional experiences. They talk about tools and techniques for feeling and healing their own adult wounds in order to show up and parent more whole-heartedly and respectfully. But don’t worry - they start off way lighter and first talk about the most important concerns of the 1980’s which were apparently the ozone layer, protecting text books by covering them with paper bags, and Aspartame. They also go on for way too long about which file folders should be which colors for various school subjects. Tangents abound today! They go on to share intimately about some recent experiences with their eight-year old son Bradshaw and navigating his emotions without shaming his personal experience. They also talk about the importance of giving children the opportunity to navigate through difficulties in order to build their own sense of resiliency and strength. Let us know what you think about this episode and if you’d like more like this one!
And as always, we hope you truly enjoyed this episode and please if you do, consider subscribing or leaving us a written review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Thanks so much and see you all next Thursday!

This week Seth and Katharine welcome the iconic John Sullivan - CPA, tax attorney, town planner and developer, real estate lover, and the bravest entrepreneur we know. John shares with us the first 100-120 of Winthrop, the walkable town he and his wife have been creating and building for over 25 years. With every odd seemingly against them, John tells the story of how they overcame each and every obstacle that was thrown their way and by the grace of God were able to navigate this seemingly unsolvable maze. From having money to having no money, heart-attacks, sudden deaths, and literally no path to follow, John shares his story and the insights he’s learned about life and business. We hope you truly enjoy this episode and please if you do, consider subscribing or leaving us a written review on Apple Podcasts. Thanks so much and see you all next Thursday!
John Sullivan’s very unofficial bio: Originally from Brockton, Massachusetts, and the youngest of seven, John was dragged to St. Petersburg, Florida when his parents retired and couldn't wait for him to finish his high school years. Luckily he ended up in the same high school as Kay Beckett, who would become Kay Sullivan - a woman who for various and unknown reasons continues to be married to him 45 years and counting. John started his first business at 15 by renting sound equipment that he didn't own out to local musicians in an enterprise that turned out to be quite successful. His second business as a concert promoter did not turn out so well, but that's a story for another day. John is a CPA and tax lawyer by trade but when he and his wife moved to the Greater Brandon area in Florida they saw the problems of suburban sprawl. In an attempt to help, he and his wife accidentally but maybe on purpose stumbled into town planning and building and thus the Traditional Neighborhood Development known as Winthrop was born. He has been working on this nightmare...I mean dream since 2000. He and his wife now live there as well. They have three children, one of whom insists that he be on her super cool podcast.

Welcome to this bonus episode of A Rainbow in the Storm. We will continue our regularly scheduled program this Thursday with a new interview coming your way; however we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the one year anniversary since hurricane Helene swept through Western North Carolina, changing the lives of tens of thousands of people. We believe it’s important to pause and acknowledge our own feelings and processing of the past year and to reflect on our bigger community and the changes that have happened here. We also wanted to have Bradshaw on the podcast to remind us that kids are resilient and are so much more focused in the present — and have a lot to teach us. As it is also our wedding anniversary of course we have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for, but we didn’t want to let this important milestone pass without giving respect to those who lost their lives and to honor those who dedicated so much time and effort to help save many and helped us move through the devastation that ensued during and after hurricane Helene. Thank you to all who listen and please remember that we are all so lucky to be alive and to have each other. We’ll see you next Thursday!
Also be sure to check out Hayley Everett’s music on her Instagram page. Her beautiful song, “What Remains is Love” is featured in the opening of this episode.
